Paukenmesse – Mass in Time of War
Haydn’s 1796 mass setting provides a dramatic reflection of troubled times in the midst of the European war.
Paukenmesse – Kettledrum Mass – refers to the timpani which provide the pulse to a desperate cry for peace in the final Agnus Dei.
The programme also includes:
O be joyful in the Lord (The Hundredth Psalm) by Vaughan Williams
Beati quorum – Stanford
Crucifixus – Lotti
Tenebrae – by Michael Haydn, the younger brother of Joseph, the composer of the Paukenmesse
Locus Iste – Bruckner
With the accompaniment of a small chamber ensemble – including those essential timpani – we look forward to what should be a special performance
